Relation of Tangent and Secant from an External Point

Relation of Tangent and Secant From an External Point:

If a secant and a tangent of a circle are drawn from a point outside the circle, then the product of the lengths of the secant and its external segment equals the square of the length of the tangent segment.

large AC^2= CB; X ;CD

Illustration: Find the length of the tangent when the length of the secant 5 cm and the external segment is 4 cm.

Let AC = x  Given secant CD= 5 and external segment BC = 4 cm

large AC^2= CB; X ;CD

large x^2= 4(5+4)= 4; X;9= 36

x= 6 cm
